Alf and Zach launch the second Ideanomics podcast with a discussion on the general landscape of electric vehicle (EV) charging globally and the current challenges faced by countries wanting to expand their EV charging station network. While the number of charging stations around the world continues to increase, Zach points out that drivers still worry about the range of EVs due to a lack of awareness about the technology. Even Alf recounts a story of how he went from being hyper-concerned over charging his new EV every night to realizing how little he had to worry about charging his car for everyday driving around his community.

Alf brings up research done in China, where there are plans to phase in electric charging stations. He explains that since there is a need to convince people that the charging network is robust enough to meet their needs, they are working to switch old gas stations into charging stations and slowly show the viability of electric vehicles. Alf is particularly interested in the innovation being carried out in China, where the adoption of charging stations has been easier to consider due to the lack of an oil and gas lobby. The biggest challenge, however, is behavior change.

Both Alf and Zach explore the challenges and exciting future opportunities within electric vehicle charging. Alf believes that fast charging will improve over time and is interested in the need for a technological leap forward in terms of batteries. As Zach says, there will be a lot of problem solving and creativity within the sector to look forward to, and immense opportunity throughout the process.

To hear more on these topics, along with Zach’s thoughts on future EV charging station innovation, listen to the show!
