I.D. Porterfield and George Hyatt Jr. and D.P. Brown and A.D. Longhouse
Abstract

Summary A comparison of Holstein cows kept in comfort and tie-chain stalls was made. Based on nine comparisons, eight produced more milk while in comfort stalls. This increase amounted to 12 to 97.2 lb. of milk per week. Those kept in comfort stalls sustained fewer injuries, remained cleaner and spent significantly more time lying down. The difference in the amount of bedding used and cleaning time for each type stall was not statistically significant.
