The Inhibition of Homogeneous Organic Decompositions
Abstract A free radical mechanism is proposed to account for the inhibition of organic decompositions by nitric oxide, based on the assumption that the nitric oxide can both start and stop reaction chains in the substrate. Propylene inhibits organic decompositions and a free radical mechanism appears to account for this effect also. Ethyl nitrite completely inhibits the oxygen promoted chain in acetaldehyde at 300°C but has only a relatively small effect at 500°C.
