Incentives Hike Productivity Survey shows wage incentive plans in 29 industries increased productivity by an average of 63.55%

Abstract

WAGE INCENTIVE plans pay off big for industry. A survey of IT management consultant firms, conducted by- John D. Dale, president of the George Elliot Co., shows that such plans increased productivity in 29 industries by an average of 63.55%. The survey turned up other gains. Employee earnings in the 29 industries, for example, increased by an average of 20.6%; the companies, in turn, came up with an average saving in unit labor costs of 25.91%. On the average, every 1% increase in wages earned by employees paid off in a 3.1% gain in productivity, with unit costs dropping 1.25%. The survey covered 2500 wage incentive plans in companies from every section of the U. S. Seventy-seven per cent of the plans date from 194S, with the rest installed during or before World War II.
