Synthesis and physical properties of a novel S-shaped liquid crystal
A novel S-shaped liquid crystal, 4,4'-bis(6-(2-(6-(4-(4-cyanophenyl)phenyloxy)hexyloxy)phenyloxy)hexyloxy)biphenyl, was prepared and the physical properties were investigated. The S-shaped compound possessing cyanobiphenyl moieties exhibited a monotropic nematic phase. The nematic phase was miscible with that of 4-hexyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl(6OCB). On the other hand, a binary mixture between the S-shaped compound and 5-octyl-2-(4-hexyloxyphenyl)pyrimidine (8-PYP-6O) showed SmA and unidentified smectic phases. We discuss structural effects of the S-shaped compound on the phase transition behavior.
