Posterior growth of maxilla

Moses Diamond
Abstract

The conclusion that the maxilla is “shoved forward” as growth occurs in the posterior region has been examined. This conclusion is based upon the anatomic relationships existing between the tuberosity regions of the maxilla and the descending pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone in the adult stage. It is assumed that this relationship exists during the entire growth history of these regions. Evidence has been presented that, instead, the posterior regions of the maxilla are found laterally and posteriorly to the descending pterygoid processes during all of the stages of growth from fetal stage to maturity. The posterior regions of the maxilla grow into the sphenomaxillary space and are not buttressed against the pterygoid processes until the final stage of maturity.
