Graduated from Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys in 1954, Prof. Nikolay P. Lyakisiiev was a Fellow of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and was elected Foreign Member of Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2003.Lyakisiiev was a famous metallic material expert and steel metallurgist. He was former Chairman of the Baikov Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science as well as Chairman of the International Union of Metallurgical Workers. His major research achievements include: (1) study of non-crystal and micro-crystal structure high-performance alloys, and development of the production techniques and equipment; (2) study of 20-30% strength improvement in plain carbon steel. Industrial applications were made possible by changing chemical composition, heat treatment to change structural fault distribution, full use of heat in the rolling process, and reasonable control of cooling in different stages; (3) basic research and technique development for direct iron process. Direct iron process causes no coking pollution, where production of low-carbon iron plays a very important role. Ground-breaking achievements have been made; (4) Leading the making of Russia’s steel industry development plan in the perspectives of science and technology management and macro-strategy. He proposed the Outline on Reduction of Metallic Volume for the manufacturing industry, and cut down metallic volumes in relevant products and facilities across Russia by 50% via use of high quality materials and improvement of mechanic product design.
