You can live-stream the Kentucky Derby in virtual reality

Grab a mint julep and strap on your most flamboyant hat, because the Kentucky Derby is this Saturday.

But if you’re not a multi-millionaire horse owner or one of the few folks who managed to get tickets to the raucous party at Churchill Downs’ infield, there’s still a chance to feel like you’re at the track—as long as you’ve got a virtual reality headset, that is.

NextVR will be live-streaming the “fastest two minutes in sports” starting at 4 p.m. ET through the NextVR app for the Samsung Gear VR headset. So, this year you’ll be able to experience the race from the comfort of your home. Pants optional.

NextVR says the broadcast will include a series of VR cameras positioned around the track, one near the owners’ suites, and two more in the paddock so you can see the horses getting themselves pumped up before the big race.

How do horses get pumped up? Who knows? But you’ll be able to see it—in VR!

This isn’t the first sporting event that NextVR has live-streamed. The company has also streamed NBA and NHL games via the Samsung Gear.

To watch the Derby, you simply have to connect your Samsung smartphone to the Gear VR, download the NextVR app, and navigate to the NBC channel.

Unfortunately, watching the race on the NextVR won’t give you any deeper insight into which horse you should bet your kid’s college fund on. But if you lose, at least you can console him with the fact that you got to watch a bunch of horses run around in virtual reality. And isn’t that what’s really important?
