Google appears to be testing a "send photos faster" option on the Messages app, which prioritizes speedy delivery over image quality. The new capability is not widely rolled out, with only select users reporting seeing it, 9to5Google reports(Opens in a new window).

The feature comes as a new toggle in a menu of others settings in the Google Messages app. It's labeled "Send photos faster," with the description "Resolution is reduced for faster sending."

The feature likely only applies to RCS messages, short for Rich Communication Services. In comparison to standard SMS messaging, RCS chats provide an upgraded experience similar to Apple iMessage but for Android phones like the Google Pixel or Samsung Galaxy.

Photos sent via SMS are generally lower resolution already, so it appears the new feature gives users the option to downgrade the file size but preserve other RCS messaging features. This includes the ability to see when someone is typing, send messages over mobile data and Wi-Fi, enable read receipts, and share higher resolution photos.

It could also be useful for those on a limited data plan, or in areas of low service (or big crowds) where sending a large file isn't feasible. However, Google has not confirmed the feature nor provided details on its intended use.
