From Radio to Artificial Intelligence: Review of Innovative Technology in Literacy and Education for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons is now available in Arabic. Published by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) and the Regional Bureau for Sciences in the Arab States (UNESCO Cairo Office), and originally launched in English and French in Côte d’Ivoire on the occasion of International Literacy Day on 8 September, this Arabic translation is a response to the high demand from Member States in the region.

The report presents a review of relevant literature and an analysis of 25 literacy and education programmes from around the world, including the Arab States, wherein information and communication technologies (ICTs) are used to provide learning opportunities for refugees, migrants and internally displaced persons (IDPs). The report also examines the reasons behind the persistent lack of data that are available on the state of literacy for youth and adults globally and the scarcity of literature on the effectiveness of ICTs for providing refugees, migrants and IDPs with the chance to engage in lifelong learning.

The analysis of the 25 programmes reveals that ICTs play an important role in overcoming barriers to learning for those vulnerable groups. Strategies to increase the use of ICTs are provided in the report and are elaborated across six thematic areas: (1) access and inclusion, (2) capacity-building of teachers and educators, (3) relevant content and innovative andragogy, (4) monitoring and evaluation, (5) strategic partnerships, and (6) recognition, validation and accreditation of learning.

Policy-makers, programme providers, international and civil society organizations, and other actors engaged with Member States to provide inclusive, quality education to refugees, migrants and IDPs will benefit from the rich analysis and diverse examples included in the publication.
