Heat Builds Across the Central States

29 Jun 2020, 7:00 am

The temperature will be climbing across the middle of the nation this week. The mercury will soar through the 90s and some places may see the thermometer jump above the century point. For today (Monday), Heat Advisories have been issued in the northern Plains and for portions of the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles.

90s will be widespread across the region for high temperatures today (Monday). With humidity climbing, heat indices will be around the century point.

The heat will continue on Tuesday, building slightly to the north and east. Temperatures are expected to be at least 5 to 10 degrees above average in the northern and central Plains.

No relief will be found in the southern Plains. Highs will be in the 90s and 100s, with the heat index well into the triple digits. A reminder to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
