Secretive SoCal Startup Hyperion Teases Hydrogen Fuel Cell–Powered Electric Supercar

July 14th, 2020 by

A new Southern California clean tech startup is looking to transform transportation from the ground all the way on up to space with its new hydrogen-powered technology. This week, Hyperion announced that it will be unveiling its first product — a hydrogen-powered supercar — next month via a launch video event.

“We are extremely excited to launch Hyperion to the world so we can educate people to the benefits of hydrogen-based power systems,” Angelo Kafantaris, Hyperion CEO and founding member said. “As the most abundant element in the universe, the potential is virtually limitless. Our goal is to tell the story of hydrogen with inspiring vehicles and infrastructure solutions. With the debut of the XP-1, we aim to kick-start the final frontier towards a cleaner tomorrow for generations to come.”

The teaser video for the Hyperion XP-1 released by the company this week doesn’t show us much about the car, revealing a vehicle that looks strikingly similar to the Tesla-esque images that come before each vehicle reveal. The low posture and flared fenders are reminiscent of the classic Ford GT with modern LED headlight upgrades.

Hyperion XP-1

Hyperion says the XP-1 will be hydrogen-powered, but offers scant details about how the vehicle will utilize the hydrogen, simply noting that, “The XP-1 will utilize an advanced hydrogen-fueled propulsion system and aims to help usher in a new frontier of automotive technology.”

We do know the XP-1 is an advanced prototype and is expected to lead the world towards a more sustainable, zero emission future.

The Hyperion Company, Inc. was founded in 2011 by a team of PhDs, and has since established three primary business arms. All three build on the foundational premise of developing hydrogen-powered power and delivery technologies, as Hyperion Energy, Hyperion Motors, and Hyperion Aerospace.

Hyperion Motors aspires to leverage experience from its team in the fields of engineering, aeronautical, and space to optimize the potential of hydrogen-powered powertrains in a single high performance vehicle, the XP-1. The goal is to deliver a vehicle that can outperform the sports cars of today, just without the emissions. The team believes it can deliver the promise of zero emission hydrogen powertrains to customers in a new way that’s more efficient than current battery electric vehicles.

We’ll have to wait until next month to see the XP-1, but until then, have a look at the teaser video below and let us know what you think in the comments. As with any startup and doubly so for startups in the automotive space, success is unlikely, but what the hell. We have to pull for every single zero emission company to deliver on its vision, its aspirations, and its future if even a few of them are going to help us change the world for the better. Let’s do this!
