The number of telephone subscriptions in Nigeria increased by 1.46 million lines to 192.27 million from April to May, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Teledensity rose from 99.96 percent in April to 100.72 percent in May.
GSM operators had 190.48 million subscribers on their networks, or a 99.82 percent market share. VoIP operators had a 0.12 percent market share, fixed wireless and wired operators had 0.06 percent and CDMA had 0.0 percent.
According to NCC, MTN Nigeria had 76.02 million active lines on its network in May, or a 39.61 percent market share, followed by Globacom with 52.06 million customers, or 27.12 percent of the Nigerian market. Airtel Nigeria served 51.5 million subscribers or a 26.83 percent share. 9Mobile controls 6.37 percent with 12.23 million subscriptions. Visafone, whose subscribers now run on the MTN network but captured separately in the NCC data, had 137,086 active subscriptions in May with a 0.07 percent market share.
