As the heat and humidity builds across the Plains and Midwest, the threat for severe thunderstorms has returned to the region as well. Friday’s risk includes most of the Northern Plains, with threat area Saturday covering much of the same real estate. There is a marginal risk (level 1 on a scale of 1 to 5) from North and South Dakota eastward into the western Great Lakes. Large hail and strong wind gusts are the main threats for Saturday.
Storms will form once again along a cold front in the Dakotas and near a warm from in Minnesota. With temperatures well into the 90s and high humidity, thunderstorms will have lots of energy to support development. During peak heating in the late afternoon and early evening, a few storms will likely become severe.
The system will slide slightly to the southeast Sunday, pushing the severe weather threat southward. A marginal risk covers areas most of Wisconsin westward to northern Kansas.
