Forging a Path to Providing Work Experience to Engineering Students

An important foundation in the development of student engineers is the engagement with authentic engineering practice during their tertiary studies.  All organisations employing engineers can play a critical role in developing the future engineering workforce by providing opportunities for this exposure.

Engineers Australia has been working with university and industry to enhance the opportunities for Western Australia’s undergraduate engineers to obtain relevant experience. A special collaboration during the construction downturn led to the release of Engineers Australia’s guidelines for providing work experience to engineering students.

With the recent disruption to students’ education and impact on work placements being offered to student engineers, these guidelines have been updated and reflect broader opportunities for industry to engage with the universities.

Members can access a copy of the guidelines and also read success stories of how this has helped the next generation of engineers here.

Hayley Wheatley’s Intern Experience at Clough

I completed the Clough Engineering Summer Internship over the 18/19 break whilst undertaking the Master of Professional Engineering in Chemical Engineering at The University of Western Australia. The internship provided opportunities to contribute to, learn from and apply engineering skills in solving problems for ongoing engineering projects and live assets. Clough ensured I had variety in these tasks and was mentored throughout by experienced engineers. This was an asset to professional, technical and personal development as a young engineer.
