Tropical Storm Gamma made landfall near Tulum, Mexico on the eastern side of the Yucatán peninsula around 11:45 am CT on Saturday. Gamma is a strong tropical storm with sustained winds of 60 mph.

It is the 24th named storm of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season and the 3rd using the Greek alphabet.

Tropical storm alerts have been issued for the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. These alerts include Cancun.

Gamma is forecast to move across the Yucatán through the weekend, emerge into the Gulf of Mexico and move into the Bay of Campeche early next week. While over land, Gamma is expected to weaken slightly and remain a tropical storm through the middle of next week while it moves west-southwest through the Bay of Campeche.


Wind shear is low in the Gulf of Honduras and sea surface temperatures are very warm, which supports strengthening. Conditions could be less favorable in the Bay of Campeche.

Very heavy rainfall will occur over the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize, and over western Cuba. 2-4″ are likely, with isolated amounts near 6″. Flash flooding and mudslides are possible.
