HTC Vive reveals two new upgraded VR headsets

HTC has announced two new versions of its Vive VR headsets which include 5K resolution, a 120° field of view and support for 120Hz refresh rates.

The Vive Pro 2 is primarily designed to be linked to a PC for gaming experiences and features a 120Hz display with 2448x2448 pixels per eye that should eliminate the “screen door” issues that lower res headsets can suffer from. This is an increase on the 2880x1600 resolution, 90Hz panels of the original Vive Pro.

The Vive Focus 3 is more designed for business usage and is a standalone headset that uses inside-out tracking instead of external sensors to determine a user’s position.

The Focus 3 has display panels with 2448×2448 resolution for each eye with a 90Hz refresh rate, both upgrades to the 1440x1600 pixels per eye and 75Hz refresh rate for 2019’s Vive Focus Plus. It also has swappable batteries that can be charged to 50 per cent in just 30 minutes and fine-adjustable inter pupillary distance range to help prevent blur and eyestrain.

Unveiled at the company’s annual ViveCon event, the ultra-high-resolution displays and wide viewing field found in both headsets are among the highest specs available on the market at the moment.

Cher Wang, HTC Chairwoman and CEO, said: “Today’s launch marks a major milestone in our strategy to create the very best immersive experiences. We have listened to our customers, from well-known global companies to smaller firms and professional users, and have designed these premium headsets from the ground up to meet the challenges they face, adding a professional range of software, platform and services to make implementation as smooth and effective as possible.”

Those with existing HTC Vive accessories will be able to buy just the new Pro 2 headset as an upgrade for £659, starting on 11 May. In August, a full-kit version of the Pro 2, which includes controllers and base station, will go on sale for £1,299. The all-in-one Focus 3 will cost £1,060 and will be on sale from 24 June.

Facebook, which purchased VR firm Oculus in 2014, has its own Oculus Quest 2 headsets that cost just £299.

However, speaking to The Verge, HTC Vive general manager Dan O’Brien said his firm would not be producing headsets that can compete at this price any time soon. He said Facebook’s headsets are “artificially subsidised” with the hope that funds are recouped through later software sales and the social network’s advertising model.
