More than 5 inches of rain have fallen in southern Illinois over the last 10 days, but the farmers who need it most haven’t seen a drop. The June 8 drought map shows severe drought in 8 northeast Illinois counties, covering just shy of 5% of the state.

Moderate drought covers nearly 4% of the state, up from about 2%. Abnormally dry acreage also increased this week to 12% of the state. About 80% of the state is free of drought conditions.

The June 7 Crop Progress Report showed topsoil moisture levels were rated 5% very short, 16% short, 71% adequate and 8% surplus. Subsoil moisture levels rated 6% very short, 16% short, 71% adequate and 6% surplus.

In addition to moisture challenges, many farmers have reported crop damage from late frosts. Dan Luepkes farms near Oregon, Illinois and has had frost damage on 100% of his corn acreage. Earlier in the growing season, he lost some soybeans to frost as well.

Illinois Corn Progress

Monday’s Crop Progress Report said 93% of corn in the state had emerged, above the 82% five-year average. The corn crop was rated 16% excellent, 58% good, 24% fair, 2% poor, and 0% very poor.

Illinois Soybean Progress

Illinois farmers have planted 93% of their soybeans, pacing ahead of both last year and the five-year average. Soybean emergence was pegged at 84%.

The Illinois soybean crop was rated 12% excellent, 61% good, 25% fair, 2% poor, 0% very poor.

Illinois Winter Wheat Progress

Winter wheat in Illinois is 96% headed, according to the latest Crop Progress Report. Harvest has not yet begun, putting farmers behind the 2% average.

The Illinois winter wheat crop was rated 22% excellent, 54% good, 21% fair, 2% poor, and 1% very poor.

Illinois Pasture and Range

Illinois pasture and range conditions were rated 30% good, 23% fair, 2% poor, 0% very poor in the June 7 Crop Progress Report.
