Record hot temperatures continue to bake the western United States and a piece of that large dome of heat will break off, heading to the Midwest U.S. prompting heat alerts.
First in the Southwest, Excessive Heat Warnings (purple/pink) are in effect for parts of Utah, Arizona, Nevada, California, and Oregon. Here, high temperatures could reach to 95-110 degrees with isolated valley locations reaching up to 120 degrees! Elsewhere, heat advisories are in effect (orange) for other parts of Utah, Nevada, California, as well as New Mexico and Texas. Here, high temperatures could reach 90-100 degrees!
The hottest days across the Southwest U.S. will be Father’s Day weekend. By Monday, high temperatures are expected to take a small decline for most cities. It will feel much cooler in places like Denver. Other cities, such as Salt Lake, will get a little warmer on Monday.
Potential record high temperatures are forecast this weekend, even through Monday, along the West Coast of the United States as well as the Southwest Deserts (pink dots). Some of the record heat will even rise all the way up to Seattle / Portland by Monday!
Some of the record heat in the West has leaked into the Midwest as well. The greater St. Louis, Missouri area is under a Heat Advisory through Father’s Day for a feels-like temperature to rise to between 100 and 105 degrees.
As we look ahead, a strong cold front will work its way southeast across a large section of the central United States this week. This will provide a temperature drop of 20 to 30 degrees for many cities.
As a reminder, check in on relatives and neighbors during these times of extreme heat. Never leave children or pets in the car. Know the signs of heat-related illnesses such as fatigue, nausea, and dizziness.
Also wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing, stay shaded and take plenty of breaks, and limit caffeine and increase your water intake.
