Record Breaking Heat for the Northwest

23 Jun 2021, 5:22 pm

Record-breaking heat is on the way for the Pacific Northwest as we head into the last weekend of June! Many cities may tie or break records to close out the month.

Heat Alerts

There are heat alerts in place for the weekend as temperatures will reach triple digits multiple days in a row. It is important to know the signs of heat exhaustion and stroke ahead of time and plan for indoor activities this weekend.

Potential Records

Many cities across the Pacific Northwest will have the opportunity to tie or break records Friday – Sunday, especially for inland areas farther from the cooler Pacific air mass.

Seattle has the opportunity to hit the mid and upper 90s on Sunday, which would tie the city’s hottest temperature ever recorded in June, from 2017 of 96°.

Below is a list of many Pacific NW cities that could feel record temperatures on Saturday!

Heat will continue into Sunday, where some inland locations could hit the 110s, like Lewiston, ID. Most of the records to tie or break are from 2015, when the Pacific Northwest had a very long stretch of triple digit heat.

Temperature Forecast

In many locations, the heat will be about 30-35° above average for late June!

Temps will steadily rise headed towards the weekend, with the peak heat in Seattle expected on Sunday. Overnight lows will recover to the 60s and 70s which should offer relief overnight.

Farther inland, for areas like Spokane, WA, heat will reach for the 110s, and continue straight through the beginning of next week.  If Spokane gets over 108°, then it will be a new “all time record high temperature” for the city. Temps will also recover to the 70s overnight, so make sure to leave the windows open to cool the house down.

Because of the extended period of heat, it is important to be prepared. Many homes in the Pacific NW do not have A/C – here are some helpful tips from the National Weather Service office in Seattle, WA.
