Sony confirmed on Saturday that the PS5 announcement will be live-streamed on Wednesday, 16 September at 13:00 PT (Pacific Time), 21:00 British Summer Time (BST) and 22:00 South Africa Standard Time (SAST).

As per the press release, Sony intends to give us “one more look” at some of the games coming to the Playstation 5 (PS5) console, which is set to be released during the 2020 holiday season.

Would this announcement also include information about the next-gen PS5 console? A price or a confirmed release date, at the very least? We hope so, seeing as Xbox recently showed all their cards.

PS5 announcement: What to expect

Game reveals and trailers, we know that much for sure. That said, during the first PS5 games announcement, Sony also showed us what the entire PS5 series would look like, so we live in hope.

Sony’s next digital showcase will “weigh in at around 40 minutes”, and will feature updates on all the latest titles from Worldwide Studios and Sony’s world-class development partners. 

If Twitter is anything to go by, the PlayStation community of gamers really want answers with regards to the Playstation 5’s backward compatibility. One netizen summed it up perfectly:

Why wasn’t in streamed on 9 September

The rumour mill initially believed that a PS5 announcement would be coming our way on 9 September 2020; it was the 25th anniversary of the release of the PlayStation 1, after all.

In addition to that, UK retailer Game Guildford hinted that a Sony PS5 event would be happening during that same week. In a now-deleted tweet, Game Guildford said:
