Spotify on Tuesday introduced a new feature called Group Sessions on its platform. The newly launched feature enables the company’s Premium users to listen to a podcast or a playlist irrespective of their distance.
The music streaming service had first introduced this feature back in May this year in beta mode to a selected bunch of users. At the time, this feature allowed groups of Premium users to share control of their listening sessions with others in real time. It also offered shared opportunities for collaboration among all the listeners.
Now, the company has rolled out its Group Sessions feature to all its users across the globe. Although the feature is still in the beta mode, the company has added a new functionality that allows the Spotify Premium users around the world to tune into the same playlist or podcast simultaneously. “So no matter the distance—whether six feet apart or a thousand miles away—you and the members of your squad can now each listen to the same content at the same time on your own devices (as well as control playback),” the company wrote in its blog post. Up to five users can stream content together using this feature.
Spotify says it will continue to improve this feature over time.
Here’s how you can use it:
Step 1: Open Spotify and play a song or a podcast.
Step 2: Tap on the icon with a remote and a screen at the bottom of the screen.
Step 3: Under Start a group Session, tap on Start Session option.
Step 4: Now tap on the Invite Friends option.
Step 5: Now you will get three options. You can share the session with any social or messaging app listed on your screen.
Step 6: You can choose the Copy Link option to share the session via a messaging app.
Step 7: If your friends are nearby, you can show them a Spotify code which they can scan to join in.
