Postdoctoral position available at Darmstadt University of Technology

The Graduate School of Urban Studies (URBANgrad) at Darmstadt University ofTechnology (TUD) has set up a new graduate program on urban and infrastructural changein East Africa. This interdisciplinary program is funded by the Hans Böckler Foundationand includes the following academic subjects: Spatial and Infrastructure Planning,Urban Development and Design, History of Technology, and Economic Geography andGlobal Studies. Within this program TUD invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral positionin the field of urban and/or infrastructure planning starting in October 2015 for an initial25 months (with an intended extension of three years).

The program "UrbanInfrastructures in Transition" focuses on developments in the East-African cities of Dares Salaam and Nairobi. In particular, it highlights the history of and the current challengesposed by urban infrastructures - the supply and use of water, energy, sewerage,telecommunication, and transportation services. Within its framework, researcherscritically investigate the tensions between, on the one hand, internationally circulatingtechnological ideals and models in the planning, design and construction of citiesand, on the other hand, local processes of translation and modification.

TUD invites applications from candidates with a completed doctorate in urban/regionalplanning, geography, science and technology studies or a related field with excellentacademic records, research experience in cities of the Global South and a strong interestin African cities. Your previous research activities and your publication record reflectyour strong interest and extensive knowledge in the fields of urban studies, andurban governance and planning, as well as your strong methodological skills in empiricalsocial/urban research. Knowledge in the social studies of technology and/or postcolonial(urban) studies is desirable for this position.
