Rescuers in Sri Lanka on Monday scrambled to clear roads and deliver aid to more than half a million people affected by Cyclone Ditwah. The cyclone, which struck on Friday, has killed 355 people, with 366 still missing, according to official figures.
Packing strong winds and torrential rains, the cyclone triggered the country's worst floods in a decade, causing devastating landslides in the hilly central region.
In response to the disaster, China has extended emergency assistance to support relief operations. In a statement posted on the social media platform X, the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka announced that the Red Cross Society of China has provided $100,000 in emergency cash aid to the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society. The statement added that emergency assistance from the Chinese government is also underway.
Furthermore, Chinese businesses and community groups in Sri Lanka have mobilized support. The Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the Overseas Chinese Association in Sri Lanka have launched donation initiatives, collectively raising 10 million Sri Lankan rupees ($32,500) for the affected areas.
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake echoed the international call for support. In an address to the nation on Sunday night, he appealed for international solidarity, expressing his expectation for support from friendly nations and the Sri Lankan diaspora in the country's recovery and reconstruction efforts.
