Jaundice, the yellow discoloration of skin and eyes, is caused by the accumulation of bilirubin, a waste product that the liver normally removes from the body. 

Patients who did not recover from jaundice after surgery typically received additional steroid therapy, resulting in higher doses for children who were not responding well to treatment.
